Since the beginning for the 1990s Thomas Schütte deals with the female figure. Here his areas of intrest are the famous art historic depiction of the resting female nude which stands for the universal parable for the beauty of life and sence of being.
Schütte sovereignly subjects the laying, crouching and standing figures to deformation and transformation any kind for which he uses materials he is accustomed to - from aluminium to bronze. This way he sounds out the different options that are seemingly incompatible with each other for creating a sculpture of a human figure. He does this by dealing with different froms of expression of the mondern sculptures by Rodin and Maillol, Matisse until Picasso and Moore, from Kolbe to Marcks.
Though, Schütte does not vary the trasitional decpition. Rather he distorts, dismantels and changes it and transports it emphatically to the present: Due to the astonishing diversity of the form spectrum between organic-figurative and intuitive-abstract he does not only create anatomically defromed female bodies but also bodies free from form and movements and emotional birth. Because Schütte percieves the body as an almost from less biomass. Thus. his figures are weired natural as well as artistic mixes creatures whoes contures are not even clrealy definable and do not hold an identity. Whether monumental, life-sized or miniature his odd female sculptures capture us over and over in a spell and distress us at every time with their mixture of aversion and beauty which does not correspond to the usual ideal.
