WOODEN KIFWEBE MASK.
Maker/Designer: Basonge/ Zaire.
Technique: Carved and painted wood.
Measurement: 37x20,5x22cm.
Provenance:
Private collection Baden-Wurttemberg, purchased 1996 at Galerie Simonis, Düsseldorf.
The Basonge live in a vast region traversed by the Lomani, a tributary of the Congo River.
Kifwebe masks often were created as pairs, representing ancestors. They appeared whenever the group felt threatened. Our mask is very close to the traditional, strictly geometric type. Since a comb-like attachment is missing, the mask can be considered as female.
