On the stretcher old inscription: "Oelbild des Dichters Adalbert Stifter geb. 23/10 1806 in Oberplan + 28/1 1868 in Linz / Freund u. Schüler des berühmten Landschaftsmalers Ant. Hansch in Wien".
Literature:
F. Novotny: Adalbert Stifter als Maler, Vienna/Munich 1979.
Possibly the landscape shown here is the work 'High Mountain Lake' listed under no. 158. This work, of which no illustration is available, was sold to Berlin in 1895 and described as clearly influenced by Hansch in the notes of the time.
