The internationally renowned U.S. painter and graphic artist is an influential protagonist of Figurative Realism and pioneer of Pop Art. Initially committed to abstraction, from the mid-1950s on he found his painterly style and his motif: the portrait, which especially often shows his wife and muse Ada, but also friends and companions. In mostly large format, he reproduces the portraits, in the style of advertising posters, simplified and flat, almost stencil-like, with strong colors. In doing so, he reduces the facial expression to the essential, without giving any clues to the inner life of the person. Alex Katz is also particularly known for his graphic works, which come in a wide variety of formats.
The work presented here stands out because of its monumentality. Katz places "Nicole" impressively on the right side in front of a long, dark surface. The striking red raincoat and the dynamic of the hairstyle are thus particularly well accentuated. Confidently, "Nicole" looks at the viewers and lures us into the picture.
