" “Still Life” by Tom Wesselmann is not only the artist's first ceramic work - it is the first important work ever by a Pop Art artist in the medium of ceramics. Wesselmann's work for Rosenthal is a "feminine" ceramic object with the components shoe, belt and flower vase. In the almost aggressive colors typical of Pop Art, Tom Wesselmann creates here a still life (sic) with a fetish character. Striking is the mixture of three- and two-dimensional structure. While the shoe and belt are depicted almost realistically, Wesselmann interprets the vase with flowers in a two-dimensional way. The objects are separated from the outside world by a transparent cover - thus they lead a life of their own." (Dr. Heinz Spielmann in the enclosed certificate).
