Under cat. rais. no. 157, Gabler records the two groups of ducks that Gaul made in 1911 for the so-called duck fountain in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg. This fountain was a gift from Berlin city councilor Max Cassierer; Cassierer himself was the uncle of Gaul's gallerist, the most important Berlin dealer for Impressionist art, Paul Cassierer, with whom the artist was also close friends.
The fountain basin was decorated with two groups of ducks, which quickly became very popular among the Berlin population.
