"'Time' and 'transformation' are explored repeatedly in Beatriz Milhazes' work in ways that confront and contradict the idea of painting as a static art form. One key to this lies in the surfaces of her works. Frequently her pictorial field is interrupted by various kinds of disturbances or aberrations. Erosions, apparent abrasions, paint losses, revisions, reworkings. complicate and destabilize the integrity of the work's surface."
