BRONZE BUDDAH SHAKYAMUNI ON LOTUS THRONE.
Origin: Thailand.
Dynasty: Rattanakosin.
Date: 19th c.
Technique: Bronze with black lacquer, gilt.
Description: The historical Buddha sitting in meditation on an ornate pedestal in Maravijaya. Dressed
in a richly decorated robe that covers his left shoulder. His eyes closed; the right hand
in bhumisparsa (= the gesture of earth invocation/the gesture used during his
enlightenment to invoke the earth as a witness to his enlightenment), the left in dhyana
(= the gesture of meditation).
Measurement: 94x80cm.
Provenance:
Rhenish corporate collection. Acquired in Bangkok in the early 1970s. A copy of the invoice is available.
