Title: Chantourné.
Two silhouette cut-outs of a couple on cut and propped-up wood panels.
Technique: Oil on wood.
Height: 117, resp. 119cm.

Literature:
Reallexikon zur deutschen Kunst-Geschichte, volume VIII, 92, Munich 1985, p. 996, ill. 27 a and b.

Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.

Chantourné were placed in strategic positions in interiors to deliberately deceive those who came across them. They were sophisticated trompe l'oeil paintings applied either to wooden panels or to canvas. They were cut to the shape of the figure or object they were meant to represent to enhance the deception. Samuel van Hoogstraten's student and biographer Arnould Houbraken associates this type of painting in particular with Cornelis Bisschop, who, like Van Hoogstraten, came from Dordrecht.

The painting will be included in the database of the RKD, The Hague.
