MUNIER, EMILE
Paris 1840 - 1895
Title: Little Girl with Dog.
Technique: Oil on canvas.
Measurement: 83 x 62.5cm.
Notation: Signed and dated lower right: E. Munier 1892.
Frame: Framed.
Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.
The present work is by the French academic painter Émilie Munier, who trained under the eminent neoclassicist William-Adolphe Bouguerau. The artist was particularly versatile: in addition to numerous paintings with religious and mythological themes, he distinguished himself as a brilliant portraitist of children. Munier often used his own children as models for his works.
The "Little Girl with Dog" fits into the artist's canon of personal styles: it shows a curious-looking girl having a snack after shopping at the snow-covered weekly market. Her watchful gaze is completely focused on the viewer although at the same time she is being jumped on by a small dog. In accordance with the academic ideal, Munier shows his artistic skills in realistic depiction: the girl's curl flashing out from under the headdress, as well as the texture and structure of the clothing, and the dog's fur are truly to be felt in their haptics.
