Ernst Ludwig Kirchner left Dresden in the late autumn of 1911 to take his place in Berlin, as he hoped, "at the forefront of modernism there." ("an die Spitze der dortigen Moderne zu treten.") And then what was to change his whole life happened: he met the sisters Erna and Gerda Schilling. They became his "inspiration to create" ("Anregung zum Schafffen") in the following years. In glowing studio scenes (like this one) he captured their charm, their permissiveness. "I was able to create new forms." ("Ich konnte neue Formen schaffen.") For him, this meant that his drawings condensed into a "stronger and bolder experience" ("stärkeren und mutigeren Erleben"). (Gerd Presler)
