In the upper third of the portal of the Essen Cathedral Treasury is a standing oval medallion in mosaic inlay depicting the figures of Bishop Altfried and Abbess Gerswid. Altfried, later Bishop of Hildesheim, founded a ladies' convent on his estate Astnidi (=Essen) around 850, which was presided over by his sister Gerswid as its first abbess. The Essen Cathedral was later built on the site of the founding building.
A design in wrought iron for the medallion of the entrance portal was in the Margrit Loh Collection, Moyland near Kleve/Zug, Switzerland, until 2014 and in the Museum Kurhaus Kleve - Ewald Mataré Collection from 2014-2022. In addition, a plaster model is known from a photograph of the artist. In the artist's estate, an overdrawn photo on a 1:1 scale has been preserved as well as a sketch sheet with three lattice gates and heads (1954, pen on paper, 32 x 22,8 cm).
