ZIEM, FÉLIX
1821 Beaune - 1911 Paris
Title: Thai Princely Barge in Front of an Ancient Temple Complex.
Technique: Oil on canvas.
Mounting: Relined.
Measurement: 36 x 62cm.
Notation: Signed lower right: Ziem.
Frame: Framed.
Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.
A great exceptional talent in 19th century painting, Félix Ziem left behind an extensive and complex body of work after his death, much of which is now preserved in the museum in Martigues. As a self-taught painter from a humble background, he was able to acquire great economic wealth, exhibited a timeless Impressionist approach to painting - he broke with his fellow painters of the Barbizon School, to which he is often counted, as they were too dogmatic for him - and, as a well-travelled citizen of the world, also put exotic subjects on canvas. In addition to the many views of Venice, these also include works from the Far East, such as the Thai barge presented here. It combines his preference for maritime motifs with the public's curiosity about the unknown far away.
