The present painting, depicting the severed head of St. John the Baptist lying on a plate, is considered a derivative of the famous prototype by the Lombard painter Andrea Solario (Musée du Louvre, Département des Peintures). Solario's work was created around ca. 1507 and entered the Paris Museum in 1868. In the centuries before it was at the Louvre, it enjoyed great success and was often copied or reinterpreted by Italian, French and Flemish painters.
