FLEMISH SCHOOL
17th C.
Title: Deucalion and Phyrra.
Technique: Oil on wood.
Measurement: 17,5 x 24,5cm.
Frame: Framed.
Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.
According to Greek mythology, Deucalion, the builder of the first temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens, created a new human race. Zeus had ended the Iron Age with a great flood over Greece, the so-called Deucalonic Flood. Deucalion and his wife Phyrra were the only survivors of the flood in a barge.
After the water had run out again, both asked the oracle of Themis what to do. Following the advice, they threw the bones of Mother Earth over their shoulders in the form of stones. Pyrrha's stones became women, Deukalion's stones became men. Thus a new humanity was born; Hellen, one of her sons became the progenitor of the Hellenes.
