FLORENTINE SCHOOL
Late 17th century
Title: Repertoire of Fruits and Flowers.
Technique: Oil on canvas.
Mounting: Relined.
Measurement: 91 x 81cm.
Frame/Pedestal: Framed.
Provenance:
Private ownership, Switzerland.
Against a brown background, flowers, fruits and insects have been recreated with great skill and attention to detail. Among other things, we can see peaches, cherries, pears, melons, plums and even carnations and bluebells. These products of nature are not present in every season and not at the same time. Gianluca Bocchi and Alberto Cottino interpret this painting as a repertoire of fruits and flowers made by a Florentine painter for his workshop towards the end of the seventeenth century, so that from time to time a fruit or a flower would be available to be included in various compositions. The particular naturalistic rendering of each object reflects the Florentine culture of the time, which was very advanced in the field of scientific and philosophical speculation.
We are grateful to Gianluca Bocchi, Cremona, and Alberto Cottino, Turin, for their help in cataloguing the present painting.
