Born in Parma, Simonini began his career as a student of the battle painter Francesco Monti (known as Il Brescianino delle Battaglie) before becoming one of the leading exponents of the military genre himself during his lifetime. He developed his unique style, characterised by rapid brushstrokes and the use of bold and vivid colours, under the influence of the contemporary Venetian school, particularly with reference to painters such as Marco Ricci and Francesco Guardi. The two small-format studies - in the typical colour harmonies of blue, yellow, white and a contrasting red - are an outstanding example of Simonini's colouristic talent.
