Georg Jensen Silver - From German Private Collections

"The 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis marked a final phase in the development of Art Nouveau, which had already passed its peak in Paris in 1900. The surge of Art Nouveau frenzy in Germany ebbed away and everywhere a new, contemporary expression was sought. In this phase of general uncertainty, it was above all two new movements that were to prove extraordinarily influential in shaping the style of the time: The founding of the Wiener Werkstätten, which was performed with much splendour in 1903 and has remained decisive for the self-image of Austrian arts and crafts to this day, although it only existed until the interwar period - and the opening of a small jewellery workshop in Copenhagen by Georg Jensen in 1904."
The adoption of traditional shapes, cautiously modernised, was to remain as characteristic of Georg Jensen's personal style as the adoption of vegetal Art Nouveau motifs. Both create a rich, decorative appearance that nevertheless leaves enough room for a simple hand-forged silver surface. Georg Jensen's spontaneous success can be explained by his moderate view on Art Nouveau, the tasteful workmanship and a noblesse that even customers of traditional silver had to admire". Even in the early days, however, Jensen silver was not solely influenced by the style of the workshop's founder. Johan Rhode's contribution consisted of works that were a touch more cautious in their use of ornamentation, but were thus groundbreaking for the future." (see lots 86 and 87).
