LARGE BRANDY BOWL WITH LAVISH FLORAL RELIEF.
Lüders, Harmen. Hamburg.
Date: Around 1660.
Technique: Partially gilt silver.
Description: Oval, strongly vaulted, quatrefoil base. The oval, bulbous bowl with slightly flaring,
curved rim. The two S-shaped auricular handles ending in scrolls at the bottom. Chased
decor on the base and the bowl made of softly drawn out auricular leaves, deformed into
grimaces on the bowl. In the interstices large baroque flowers. At the bottom of the bowl
a large, splendid blossom in a wreath of leaves.
Weight: Ca. 850g.
Measurement: Height 15cm, width 31cm.
Mark: Inspection mark Hamburg 1658-1660 (Schliemann no.37), maker's mark Harmen Lüders (1658-77, ibid. no.233).
Provenance:
Private collection Bavaria, acquired from the art dealer F. Payer, Zurich. Previously, according to tradition, since its origination in family possession.
