SCHIESTL, HEINZ
1867 Zell am Ziller - 1940 Würzburg
Title: Gitarrespielender Bauer.
Possible study for a glass painting.
Technique: Mixed media on paper.
Measurement: 33 x
22,5cm. Notation: Monogrammed lower left: hs.
Frame/Pedestal: Framed behind glass.
Condition:
Irregularly applied, yellowed varnish. Small tears in the varnish or paint surface, especially in the upper right corner and next to the left shoulder of the guitar player. Remains of an old mounting at the left and upper edge. Verso stainings and remains of an old adhesive tape.
Frame: Slight paint chipping and light paint abrasion.
With the present sheet we can offer, besides the artist works by Rudolf and Matthäus, also a work by the rather unknown brother of the two, Heinz Schiestl. As the first-born and named after his father, he studied - just like his brothers - in his father's workshop, which he took over after his education. While his brothers devoted themselves more to painting and graphic art, Heinz Schiestl specialised in sculptures, altars and other church furnishings, stations of the cross and room furnishings with designed furniture, chandeliers and stained glass windows. This activity gave rise to the term "Schiestl room" in the Main-Franconian region.
The structure in the background of the present depiction as well as the two-dimensional overall composition and the materials used indicate that the work offered here possibly served as a study for a stained glass painting. In addition, the motif was printed as a postcard in a series of other depictions with people playing music and thus found wide circulation beyond the borders of Franconia.
