HERZOG, HERMANN
1832 Bremen - 1932 Philadelphia
Title: Glacier Landscape with Deer and Eagle.
Technique: Oil on canvas.
Mounting: Relined.
Measurement: 62 x 95.5cm.
Notation: Signed and dated lower left: H. Herzog 1860(?).
Frame/Pedestal: Framed.
Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.
From a cloud-covered mountain massif, the glacier pours into the high mountain valley. At its end stands a group of deer, above the animals an eagle circles lonely, watching for prey. Hermann Herzog depicts a majestic and wild landscape, possibly from the Rocky Mountains. During his time in North America, he explored and opened up the foreign regions for his audience and found in the landscape there the subject for which he is still highly regarded by connoisseurs today.
After his training at the Dusseldorf School of Painting with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, Andreas Achenbach and Hans Frederik Gude, Hermann Herzog, who was born in Bremen, was first drawn to the gebrig landscapes of Norway, Switzerland and the Pyrenees. From the 1860s he travelled through what is now the USA as far as California and found his motifs in the vastness of North America. He settled in Philadelphia, where he lived until his death and left behind an extensive body of work.
Today he is one of the representatives of the Hudson River School, the important group of American painters who were very close to the Dusseldorf School.
