In the summer of 1931, Pechstein undertook a longer journey through the south of France, during which he stopped in the small coastal town of Hendaye at the beginning of June. In a letter to his friend Walter Minnich dated 06.06.1931, the artist describes the creation of the work: "I painted this motif in watercolor this morning. Unfortunately, I am standing so close to the slope and in the streetcar tracks that I cannot dare to paint it large.".
