IVORY DOUBLE RELIEF OF CRUCIFIXION AND FLAGELLATION WITH IRON FRAME AND IN GLASS CAPSULE.
Hispano-Kolonial.
Date: 16th century.
Technique: Ivory, in parts carved à jour and coloured. Pierced iron framing, glassed.
Description: Octagonal shape. The flagellated Christ falling, grasping his purple coat. Depiction of
calvary with many figures. In the center Christ on the cross, below Mary, Mary Magdalene
and John.
Measurement: 8,5x8cm.
Provenance:
Private collection southern Germany.
Similar carvings, mostly in the form of prayer nuts, can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Bargello in Florence.
