HISTORIC CAMEO-NECKLACE.
Origin: Italy.
Date: Presumably ca. 1860.
Material: Clasp: 333/- yellow gold, tested, prong setting: gilt.
Total Weight: ca. 58,0 g.
Measurement: Length: 34,0 cm.
Gemstones: 16 cameos, presumably lava stone Ø ca. 16,4 - 28,7 mm.
Description: Historic necklace with raised carved cameos of different coloured lava stone. Framed by a prong setting are detailed carved depictions of an allegory of autumn. The woman shown in profile has her hair, decorated with grapes and vine leaves, falling open on her shoulders. Tilting her head slightly to the side, the cameos stand out with their particular depth.
The period from 1860 onwards was marked by a rediscovery of classical antiquity. Etruscan goldsmithing techniques, Greek motifs or Roman materials fired the imagination of a time in which the developments of the Italian Risorgimento intensified this interest.
A set consisting of brooch and bracelet with very similar cameos is listed in Bennett & Mascetti on page 144.
