PORCELAIN DISH FROM THE RAFFAEL-SERVICE.
Imperial Porcelain Manufacture. St. Petersburg.
Date: 1891.
Maker/Designer: Model Leonhard Schaufelberger.
Technique: Procelain.
Description: The rim with a grey-blue ground, within red-backed medallions with antique grisailles.
Between each two medallions a winged dog creature. The centre is framed by a light yellow
ground with meandering decoration and stylised harpies. In the centre a hexagon with a
depiction of the weeping Titaness Niobe.
Measurement: ø 24cm.
Mark: Large onglaze mark 'A III', iron red and golden contoured. 1891, gold onglaze. Green dot at the rim.

The service from which this plate is taken was commissioned in 1893 for the palace in Tsarkoye Selo and was the most extensive and important service created in the Imperial Porcelain Manufacture. The designs are based on Raphael's frescoes in the loggias of the Vatican, which were later reproduced by Quarenghi in the Winter Palace during the reign of Catherine the Great.
