GOTHIC LECTURE CROSS MADE OF WOOD AND COPPER.
Italy.
Date: Presumably around 1500.
Technique: Partially chased, engraved and gilt copper mounted on wooden core.
Description: On the front Corpus Christi as a three-nail type, the cross's ends in the shape of
trefoils. In relief on the front Mary and John and originally Mary Magdalene and God the
Father. On the back originally probably the reliefs of God the Father blessing and at the
ends the symbols of the four evangelists.
Measurement: Height 54cm.
A processional cross is used in the Roman Catholic liturgy mainly for the ceremonial entry
of a festive mass. Also they are used for processions and pilgrimages. The tradition of
leading a procession by carrying a cross mounted on a long pole originates from the early
Middle Ages. After the entry in the church, the crosses are often used also as alter
crosses and are visibly displayed close to the alter.
