The present painting is a copy of a section of the fresco decoration of the vault of the Palazzo Farnese in Rome, executed by Annibale Carracci between 1597 and 1606-1607. Annibale's brother Agostino Carracci and some of his pupils also participated in the frescoes.
Depicted is the Triumph of Bacchus. A wedding procession is witnessed, with the bride and groom - Bacchus and the mortal Ariadne - seated on two chariots, one of which is golden and drawn by two tigers, the other silver and drawn by two rams. The chariots are accompanied by dancing figures - heroes, maenads, satyrs, Pan, Silenus - carrying musical instruments, dishes and baskets of food.
