HACKERT, JAKOB PHILIPP
1737 Prenzlau - 1807 Florence
Title: Rocky Forest Landscape with a Lake.
Technique: Oil on canvas.
Mounting: Relined.
Measurement: 35 x 51cm.
Notation: Signed and dated lower centre: J.P. Hackert / 1762.
Frame/Pedestal: Framed.
Certificate:
Claudia Nordhoff, Rome 25.06.2004.
Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.
Claudia Nordhoff writes in her detailed appraisal of the painting:
"The present painting is of great interest to Hackert's oeuvre as a whole, since only three signed paintings from 1762 are known to date. One of them is a realistic view of the Spree with the castle bridge near Charlottenburg, another, which has only survived through Lohse's description, seems more comparable to the present painting. Thus we find two types of landscape, which in 1762 still stand side by side in Hackert's work with equal weight: The precisely observed veduta and the idealised landscape painting in the style of an older generation of painters, who were still highly esteemed by the public. And while the landscape portrait was Hackert's main artistic priority throughout his life, the ideal landscape, rooted in the models of the Italianists and, in later years, Claude Lorrain, also appears in all phases of his work."
