Painted from 1950 onwards, the works are called Grid Structures and refer to Jean Leppien's imprisonment as a member of the French Resistance. The red, beige and dark bars lined up in the centre of the painting are interrupted by four vertical black lines, revealing the background in blue and the crescent-shaped yellow form as a half moon. Thus Leppien writes in his biography, "For long, long years this view of the tiny patch of blue that prisoners call 'sky' haunted my painting somewhere and somehow."
