L'Éscalier de Cristal. Veuve Désarnaud. Paris
Date: Ca. 1830.
Technique: Bronze, fire-gilded. Crystal glass.
Description: Four columns on a high, rectangular base, supporting the pediment with recessed clock
capsule. Silver-plated dial with Roman hours and Arabic minutes, covered by a crystal
glass disc. Round pendulum movement with scissor escapement, compensation pendulum and
half-hour chime on a bell.
Measurement: 46x25,5x13,5cm.
Mark: On the dial inscribed "Ve Desarnaud À L'Escalier de Cristal, Palais Royal".
Crystal glass chipped several times.
Enclosed: Pendulum.
The company L'escalier de Cristal was founded in 1804 by Marie Désarnaud in Paris,
specifically in the Palais Royal. From the very beginning, she wanted to combine
fire-gilded bronze work with cut crystal glass elements. Her creations were highly
acclaimed and she was awarded the gold medal at the 'Exposition des produits de
l'industrie française' in 1819 for the exceptional toilet table of the Duchess of Berry.
This famous ensemble is now in the collection of the Louvre in Paris.
