LARGE TRAVELING BOX HASAMIBAKO.

Origin: Japan.
Dynasty: Edo period (1603-1868).
Technique: Wood with gold powder lacquer (nashiji) and gold patterns (hira maki e). Bronze fittings with finely chased patterns. Two hinged handles on the side for inserting a carrying rod.
Description: Box with slip lid, decorated on all sides with leaf tendrils and the Tokugawa coat of
arms. Similar tendrils on the fittings.
Measurement: Height 39cm, width 62cm, depth 43cm, complete height 61cm.
Condition B. Supplement: Matching but later wooden base.


Boxes of this kind were part of the trousseau of a bride of high standing and were carried in the procession to the groom's residence.

Provenance:
Collection Dr. Franz Haniel (1883-1965), since then bequest of the family estate.
