PUTZ, LEO
Meran 1869 - 1940
attributed
Title: Snail fight.
Oil study.
Date: Ca. 1903.
Technique: Oil on wood.
Measurement: 50.5 x 75.5cm.
Frame: Framed.
Cf. Literature:
H. Putz: Leo Putz - Werksverzeichnis in zwei Bänden, Vol II, Gauting 1994, cat. rais. no. 1366ff.
Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.
In the years around 1903, Leo Putz explored the theme of snail fighting in various preliminary studies and drawings, which ultimately culminated in the publication of the painting in the magazine "Jugend" in 1904 (cat. rais. no. 1370). In these scenes of intricate erotic wrestling, Putz creates humanised hybrid beings and depicts the eternal struggle between darkness and light. The present unsigned oil study is very similar to No. 1370, but some elements, such as the dark figure in the left background, are not fully executed. It can therefore be assumed that this work is one of the oil studies created in preparation for the published painting.
