Verso:
Inscribed on the frame top with a reference to Leonardo da Vinci: "LEO BENOIS. MAD. E. BAMB."
Provenance:
Private ownership, Italy.
The present painting was done by a painter who was probably active at the beginning of the 16th century and was inspired by the great genius of the European Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci. The work is based on the famous Madonna Benois, which is now in the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg.
Leonardo's painting was not copied in its entirety. Only the central group of the Madonna and Child was taken over by the artist, the background was changed: Behind the Virgin is a large window through which one can see a village with a church. In Leonardo's work, on the other hand, a small mullioned window throws light into the room in which the figures are placed.
