The Western love for painted or lacquered furniture originates from pieces, that arrived in Europe from East Asian countries through the trade routes established in the sixteenth century. Initially established for the trade of spices, this routes were also used to transport porcelain and lacquere objects. Thus, these precious pieces found their way into the European courts via the East India Company. A great fascination for this exotic culture and its products evolved. This resulted in a great demand for objects to decorate the Chinese cabinets with.
Since the import of lacquer objects via the long trade routes was very costly and time-consuming, it was no longer possible to meet the increasing demand. So European ebenists, first in France, began to develop their own techniques for Chinese-style lacquer decorations.
This piece of furniture is a wonderful example of the fascination with the exotic culture of the Far East, which flourished in the 18th century, not only in the Netherlands.
