25 PORCELAIN PIECES FROM 'BAVARIAN ROYAL SERVICE'.
Nymphenburg.
Date: 20th c.
Maker/Designer: Modelled by Dominikus Auliczek.
Technique: Porcelain, sepia camaieu, enriched in blue and gold.
Description: Overall 25 pieces, consisting of:
10 dinner plates (Ø 25cm),
5 dessert plates (Ø 21,5cm),
1 sugar bowl with lid (Ø 8.5 cm),
1 round decoratively pierced basket (height 6 cm, Ø 17.5 cm),
1 oval decoratively pierced basket (5 x 16.5 x 12.5 cm),
2 lidded tureens (height 24/19 cm, Ø 25/20 cm),
1 sauce boat with saucer (11.5 x 24 x 17 cm),
1 salad bowl (11 x 21 x 21 cm),
1 small plate (Ø 12 cm),
1 mocha cup with saucer (height 5.5 cm).
Painted in the national colours of the Free State of Bavaria, blue and white, and accented with gold, the "Bavarian Royal Service" was commissioned from the Nymphenburg manufactory on the occasion of the golden wedding anniversary of King Ludwig III and Queen Marie Therese, Archduchess of Austria-Este. The original ceremonial tableware comprised 326 pieces and was designed by the sculptor Dominikus Auliczek. The sepia camaieu paintings in the round reserves depict landscapes and buildings associated with the royal couple's personal memories. The basic shape of this piece deviates from the usual circular form and is characterised by a dodecagon. The rims of the service pieces are each painted with a sculpted row of pearls. For this reason, the service was initially given the name 'The Pearl Service'.
Mark: Green manufacturer's marks, differing impressed marks and painters' numbers.
Enclosed: 1 mocha cup with saucer. Height 5cm.
