Connecting to his successful years in Russia, during which he was also known for his military scenes and paintings of horses, Grashof sought contact with the court in Berlin from 1847. He was working towards a commission from the Prussian leadership or even directly from the king. This equestrian battle of 1848 translates his Russian successes into Prussian themes.
