Private ownership, Germany.
After his education at the Düsseldorf Academy, among others under Wilhelm Schadow, Grashof went to Russia for several years from 1838. There he successfully established good contacts through his painting and received commissions also from the Tsar's family.
With works such as this watercolour Grashof recommended himself as a painter of horses. Already in the following year he was commissioned to paint the portrait of the body horse of the heir to the throne Alexander.
