The dating of this oil study of the galloping grey horse shows it to be a work from 1837.
In that year, the young artist was still living in Düsseldorf and working at the academy
there. The following year he travelled to St Petersburg in Russia, the prelude to his
first successful years in Russia. In addition to commissioned portraits, he established
himself as a military painter; in 1838, in Russia, he transferred the study of a grey
horse shown here to the watercolour with the battle scene offered under lot 1275.
