PAIR OF IRON SHISHI GUARDING LIONS ON PEDESTALS.
Origin: South China.
Date: 19th c.
Technique: Iron.
Description: The lions with small floppy ears, bearded chins and dragon-like back scales on two lotus thrones.
Shi-Shi served as protective symbols for entrances and were usually used in pairs. As there were no lions in China at the beginning of the Dynasties, the appereance of them was unknown. There was a certain similarity between the lion's head and that of the Chinese Pekingese dog, which is why the sculptures of the shishi often adopted elements of a dog.
Measurement: Height 56/56,5cm.
Provenance:
Rhenish corporate collection. Acquired in Bangkok in the early 1970s.
