GILT BRONZE CENTERPIECE WITH MALACHITE BOWL.
Thomire, Pierre-Philippe. 1751 - 1843 Paris.
Date: 19th century.
Technique: Gilt bronze. Malachit.
Description: Flat round foot with acanthus relief. Rosette with corresponding décor and knob-like
finial mounted on the flat top side. On the sides of the foot rim three feet with leaf
décor, which finish in young women's nudes on top. The bowl above mounted inside a ring
with laurel décor.
Measurement: Height 21,5cm, ø bowl 24,5cm.
Mark: On foot inscribed "Thomire A Paris".
The impressive centrepiece carries a bowl made of malachite, which was mainly extracted
from Russian quarries and mines in the late 18th and 19th century. Due to its preciousness
and the fact that large pieces of the stone were very difficult to process, it was turned
into sought-after decorative objects to adorn palaces and salons. Among the most
significant is the famous Malachite Hall, which Tsar Nicholas I. created in the Winter
Palace in St. Petersburg as an expression of his great preference for this exquisite
material. Combined here with the fire-gilt bronze, crafted in the studio of
Pierre-Philippe Thomires, who was known throughout Europe for his luxurious bronze
objects, this centrepiece is a truly brilliant highlight for any table.
