ROTARI, PIETRO ANTONIO
1707 Verona - 1762 St. Petersburg
attributed
Title: The Miser.
Technique: Oil on canvas.
Mounting: Relined.
Measurement: 76 x 61.5cm.
Frame/Pedestal: Framed.
Verso:
On the canvas old inventory number.
Provenance:
Collection Fedor Zschille, Dresden;
Lempertz Auction, Cologne, 27.-28.05.1889, Lot. 85 (aa Pietro Graf Rotari);
Private ownership, Germany.
The painting at hand presumably is an old copy following the original by Giuseppe Antonio Nogari (Dresden, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, gal. no. 589), that was purchased by the artist himself for the Dresden gallery in Venice.
Pietro Rotari worked at the Dresden court from 1752 to 1756 where he probably had the opportunity to execute the present painting, whose style fits the period of his Saxon years.
In Dresden, Rotari regularly painted the subjects on which his current fame is based, namely character heads such as the painting at hand, in oil and pastel.
