FIGURINE OF THE ADMONISHING DEATH.

South Germany.
Date: Around 1700.
Technique: Carved boxwood. Mounted on wooden pedestal (added later).
Description: On a flat, oval plinth a male skeleton in a beggar's clothing. The tattered cloak is
loosely wrapped around the emaciated body and he wears a wide-brimmed hat on his curly
hair. The face is almost nothing but the skull and with his left index finger he points
down towards the ground as a reminder of death.
Measurement: Height (incl. pedestal) 14,5cm, width 9cm.

The virtuously carved figurine of Death as a beggar, demonstrates the highest level of
craftsmanship. At the same time, however, it is a haunting reminder of mortality.
