GONTARSKI, STEVEN
1972 Philadelphia, PA/USA
Title: Monuments to Doubt.
Date: 2003.
Technique: Fiberglass and painted and lacquered MDF.
Measurement: 655 x 200 x 180cm.
Provenance:
- White Cube, London
- Corporate collection Germany.
Sculptor Steven Gontarski studied at Brown University in Providence and at Goldsmiths College in London. His impressive sculpture "Monuments to Doubt" was presented in 2003 at "Statements 07," an event accompanying the 50th Biennale di Venezia. A beautifully crafted neoclassical figure, its head covered by a cloth, stands atop a towering obelisk-like form. The base is covered with graffiti. Contradictions interest the artist. Thus, in the hard material of the fiberglass, the flowing form of the drapery can be found. In this work, there is also a contradiction in the title. The artist has erected a "monument to doubt" and thus, a monument for something ephemeral and not worthy of admiration. Likewise, he counteracts the classical monument with the graffiti.
