WOODEN CHEST RÉGENCE.
Clavel, Étienne. Paris.
Date: Ca. 1740/50.
Technique: Brazilian rosewood and satin wood veneered and inlaid. Fire-gilded bronze fittings and marble panel.
Description: Bombé body with three drawers. Each with bands and elaborate fittings with acanthus and
shell decor.
Measurement: 87x129x70cm.
Mark: Upper right stamped on the prong E.CLAVEL. Brand stamp 'Graff' as owner's stamp in the centre of the front rim.
Literature:
- Kjellberg, Pierre: Le Mobilier Français Du XVIII. Siècle, Paris 1989. A very comparable chest of drawers by Adrien Fleurty listed and illustrated p.310.
- For further information on Clavel, see a chest of drawers in the Koller auction in Zurich, June 2010, lot 117.
The ebenist Étienne Clavel is difficult to identify as a master, as he is not mentioned in Pierre Kjellberg, 'Le Mobilier Francais', for example. However, the quality of his work is undeniable and is in no way inferior to pieces from the workshop of Étienne Doirats (1675-1732) or Adrien Fleury (until 1767).
