The German landscape painter Victor Freudemann was born in Berlin in 1857 and died there in 1926. He studied at the Berlin Academy. His most influential professors were Christian Wilberg and Eugen Bracht. He continued to exhibit regularly and on a large scale throughout his life. His works could be seen among others in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition of 1984 and 1914.
Victor Freudemann's pictorial language can be assigned to German Impressionism. His artistic strength lies above all in the depiction of quiet experiences of nature in interaction with the varying light atmospheres of different times of day and seasons of the landscapes depicted. In the present painting, Freudemann demonstrates his airy and free painting style, which is representative of his epoch. In the viewer's eye, the loose painting style comes together to form a soft and atmospheric landscape painting. A gentle breeze blows through the almost deserted Rügen dune landscape, where a few fishermen linger at their boats. The setting sun on the horizon clads the painting with its pastel colours into a romantic scene, evocing an atmospheric spring evening, which sparks a childlike anticipation of the coming summer.
