MAHOGANY BUREAU-CABINET WITH MYTHOLOGICAL MOTIFS.
Presumably Vienna.
Date: Ca. 1815.
Technique: Mahagoni, maple polished, partially ebonised resp. gold-plated. Gilt bronze and brass applications. Mirror glass.
Description: Two-piece, rectangular body on paw feet with Egyptian-style pilasters and a slightly
stepped, architectural top section. This is given rhythm by four columns with Corinthian
capitals. The three-drawer lower section has a hinged writing surface, finished at the top
with a vine border. The top section shows the god Hermes with the caduceus in his hands
floating above clouds on the central door. In the pediment above are two mythical
creatures. The writing compartment has an architecturally designed central section,
designed a terrace with a chequerboard floor, open staircase and flanking columns with
balustrade. The back wall is mirrored.
Measurement: 226x132x62cm.
More severe bumpings and also some losses among the decor elements.
