The Berlin painter Woldemar Friedrich undertook journeys early on as a photojournalist during the Franco-Prussian War, from which he brought back sketch material. After making a name for himself as a teacher at the academies in Weimar and Berlin, he accompanied Duke Ernst Günther of Schleswig-Holstein to India in 1887/88. During this extended journey, he produced numerous views and everyday scenes of the country, which was all the more exotic to the eyes of the time. These were subsequently published by Adalbert Fischer's Leipzig publishing house, including the painting of the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy presented here.
