IVORY HEAD OF A SATYR WITH ROEBUCK ANTLERS.

Germany.
Date: 19th century.
Maker/Designer: After Christoph Angermair.
Technique: Ivory, roebuck antlers.
Measurement: Length 22cm.

Literature:
Eikelmann, Renate (ed.): Bayerisches Nationalmuseum. Handbuch der kunst- und kulturgeschichtlichen Sammlungen, Munich 2008, comp. here a comparable mask by Christoph Angermair p. 151.

This small mask of a satyr is based on a series created by Christoph Angermair (c. 1580-1633) for the collection of Elector Maximilian I in the Munich Residenz. These antler malformations were regarded as "wonders of nature. The idea was to enhance their significance further by combining them with the carved ivory mask of demonic ancient Nature creatures.".
