LARGE IRON PADLOCK WITH ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS AND KEY.

Germany.
Date: Early 19th c.
Maker/Designer: Inscribed F.D. Heichelman.
Technique: Iron, brass partially gilt.
Description: Boxy, rectangular body with volute console. The body is divided on both sides by pilasters
with Ionic capitals, with pilaster strips with rosettes in between. Finished at the top
with a kind of entablature. The lock can be opened using a trick mechanism by opening the
keyhole cover in three steps by moving various parts.
Measurement: 17.5x16x4.5cm.
Mark: Engraved under the lock cover: 'F.D. Heichelman'.

Provenance:
Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia. On loan to the Deutschen Schloss- und Beschlägemuseum Velbert from 2011 to 2025.

The lock mechanism is a so-called "Bramah lock". It was invented by the English engineer Joseph Bramah in 1784. Until well into the 19th century, it was considered one of the most secure lock mechanisms and was very difficult to pick. For this reason, it was mainly used in the construction of safes.
