FRAMED RELIEF WITH JESUS ON THE MOUNT OF OLIVES.
Presumably Italy.
Date: 18th century.
Technique: Partially gilt silver relief. Wooden frame and backdrop, covered with velvet.
Description: DThe velvet-covered frame with attached rocaille elements and a large angel figure on each
of the upper corners. In the top centre a smaller, fully sculpted angel obove a scallop
ornament. In the frame the finely crafted relief with the depiction of Jesus on the Mount
of Olives in the Garden of Gethsemane. In the left corner of the picture he is kneeling in
prayer, the night before his capture and crucifixion. In the foreground the three sleeping
disciples Peter, James and John, who were to stand by him that night.
Measurement: Relief: 14 x 16,5cm. Frame: 42,5 x 43cm.
Mark: Belgian import stamp 1831-68 (Tardy p.86).
